Eight Vampire Survivors mechanics worth learning

Advanced play starts with understanding slot order, evolution-capable chests, and reversible PowerUps. These rules prevent failed builds before damage calculations or late-game setups matter.

This guide focuses on normal solo base-game rules. It does not assume that DLC, special modes, or every platform build behaves identically.

1. Inlaid Library: reserve an evolution item before filling six passive slots

In normal solo Inlaid Library runs, level-up choices provide six passive-item slots. If the passive item for the main weapon is still missing, confirm the required pair before taking the sixth unrelated passive.

Concentrating levels into one main weapon and reserving one matching passive is more predictable than raising every item evenly.

2. Inlaid Library stage items can exceed the normal six-passive limit

In Inlaid Library, an unowned passive item placed on the stage can be collected after the six normal passive types are filled.

This makes it possible to finish the level-up slots first and collect planned stage items afterward. The extra slot does not make a dangerous route safe, so check the map and travel time before relying on it.

3. A level-8 weapon is not the only evolution requirement

For the eight base-game pairs covered by the verified evolution list, prepare the level-8 weapon, its matching passive item, and a chest that can produce an evolution.

On many early normal stages, chests from bosses that appear at or after 10 minutes are the practical starting point, but stage-specific exceptions exist. A chest dropped earlier does not automatically become evolution-capable merely because it is opened later.

4. Banish no longer removes access to the level-up menu

The current official update record confirms that the level-up menu remains usable after Banish.

Decide the weapon and passive pair needed for the run before using Banish on a candidate that the plan may require.

5. Curse is not a direct experience bonus

The Curse PowerUp increases enemy speed, health, quantity, and spawn frequency. More enemies can create more targets, but their health and density also become harder to manage.

Do not assume that raising Curse always levels the character faster. Test it only after the same character can survive the stage with enough damage.

6. Empty Tome has a measurable cooldown effect

Empty Tome reduces weapon cooldown by 8% per level, up to 40% at level 5.

That makes it broadly useful, but not an unconditional first pick for every build. Protect the passive slots required for planned evolutions and check whether the selected weapons benefit from the cooldown reduction.

7. Amount does not affect every attack identically

The Amount PowerUp adds one projectile to compatible weapons. It does not apply to every weapon, and the resulting effect depends on the weapon.

Test Amount with a projectile-based main weapon and compare the same stage and settings. Do not convert the displayed projectile increase into a universal damage percentage.

8. PowerUps can be refunded and rebuilt

PowerUps can be reset and the coins spent on them refunded. This lets you test a different balance of Might, Armor, Recovery, and Amount for a new objective.

Keep the character, stage, and mode settings the same when comparing two plans. Change one group at a time so the result remains useful.

Pre-run checklist

  • Choose one main weapon and matching passive item.
  • Reserve the passive before taking a sixth unrelated item.
  • Decide whether stage items are part of the route.
  • Check when the stage can provide an evolution-capable chest.
  • Do not Banish an item needed for the current unlock or evolution.
  • Raise Curse only when the loadout can handle the added pressure.
  • Compare PowerUp changes under the same run conditions.
