Vampire Survivors Weapon Evolution: Levels, Passives, and Chests
Evolving weapons in Vampire Survivors
For the eight base-game weapons covered here, evolution follows three steps: raise the weapon to level 8, hold its matching passive item, and then open a chest that can produce an evolution. Picking up the passive item or waiting for the stage timer is not enough by itself.
This guide covers Whip, Magic Wand, Knife, Axe, King Bible, Santa Water, Runetracer, and Lightning Ring in the base game. DLC weapons and special unions can use different rules.
Step 1: Max the weapon, not your character level
The weapon must reach level 8. A character at level 8 does not meet this requirement if the weapon is still below its maximum level.
Check the weapon icon in your equipment bar. If your goal is to learn the system with one evolution, focus upgrades on one weapon instead of spreading every level-up across new weapons.
Step 2: Hold the matching passive item
Each weapon has one required passive item. For example, Whip uses Hollow Heart and Magic Wand uses Empty Tome. Having unlocked an item in the collection is not enough; it must be in your inventory during the current run.
For these eight evolutions, the passive item only needs to be held. It does not need to reach its maximum level.
Weapon | Required passive item | Evolution |
|---|---|---|
Whip | Hollow Heart | Bloody Tear |
Magic Wand | Empty Tome | Holy Wand |
Knife | Bracer | Thousand Edge |
Axe | Candelabrador | Death Spiral |
King Bible | Spellbinder | Unholy Vespers |
Santa Water | Attractorb | La Borra |
Runetracer | Armor | NO FUTURE |
Lightning Ring | Duplicator | Thunder Loop |
Step 3: Open an eligible chest
Once the weapon and passive-item requirements are ready, you still need a chest that can evolve the weapon. On early standard stages, a chest dropped by a boss from around the 10-minute mark is a practical target. The exact timing can differ by stage and special condition.
An early chest does not become eligible just because you leave it on the floor and open it after 10 minutes. Keep the completed weapon and matching passive, then defeat a boss that can drop an evolution chest.
If the evolution does not appear
Check | Common mistake | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
Is the weapon level 8? | Looking at character level | Check the weapon's own level in the equipment bar. |
Do you hold the correct passive? | Unlocking it previously or taking a similar item | Compare the exact pair with the table above. |
Can this chest evolve a weapon? | Assuming every chest works after 10 minutes | Keep the requirements and target the next eligible boss chest. |
Is it one of these eight weapons? | Applying this rule to a union or special evolution | Check that weapon's specific recipe and level requirements. |
Do not fill every passive slot just because an evolution failed. Identify which of the three requirements is missing first.
