Obsidian Knight Weapon and Equipment Selection Guide
The short answer: change one equipment decision at a time for the problem ending your runs
Obsidian Knight progression has several layers. Skills are selected during a run, while equipment, items, and character levels provide permanent growth. Later systems also add Weapon Magic and equipment-set upgrades.
Changing everything at once hides what actually helped. Record where the run failed, change one equipment or upgrade decision, then test the same destination three times.
Separate the four progression layers
Layer | What to inspect | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
In-run skills | Triggers, payoffs, survival, and enemy-line coverage | When choosing from the skill-card offer |
Base equipment and items | Contribution to damage, survival, single targets, or groups | Before replacing an equipped item |
Equipment-specific permanent systems | Weapon Magic, set upgrades, and their currencies | Before spending on an upgrade screen |
Character progression | Level and other permanent growth already applied | When repeated attempts stop at the same point |
If results swing widely with the same gear, skill selection may matter more than the equipment difference. If each run fails in nearly the same place and way, permanent progression is easier to compare.
Record these six details before changing gear
- Store version and device platform.
- Destination, such as an Act, Island, or Dungeon.
- First failure point: early wave, enemy buildup, boss, or timeout.
- Equipped weapon and armor, plus their visible roles.
- Relevant displayed values such as Armor, Max HP, and Potions.
- Main in-run skill chain and final result.
The official Google Play update notes report increases to Armor, Max HP, and Potions. Use the values shown in your current game instead of relying on an older fixed-value guide.
Choose one comparison axis from the failure symptom
First symptom | Compare this role first | When gear may not be the first fix |
|---|---|---|
Enemies accumulate or the back line survives | Group coverage, back-line reach, repeated triggers | The run never offered the trigger skill your chain needs |
A boss survives too long | Sustained single-target damage | Survival resources are already exhausted before the boss |
Repeated hits end the run early | Survival through HP, Armor, or Potions | Low damage lets the enemy count keep growing |
You survive to the limit but cannot finish | Offense and possible overinvestment in survival | Your offensive skills do not form a working chain |
Results vary heavily with identical gear | Skill pool and disabled-card choices | The failure point is nearly identical every run |
This table does not rank a universal best item. It identifies whether the current run needs damage, survival, single-target pressure, or enemy-line coverage.
Compare displayed values, extra effects, and existing investment together
A candidate weapon can show one higher value without improving the failure that ends the run. Compare the equipped weapon and the candidate on the same screens and at the same destination.
Comparison | Equipped weapon | Candidate weapon | Decision rule |
|---|---|---|---|
Displayed base values | Record only the current version's screen | ||
Extra-effect text | Separate trigger and target | ||
Role connected to the failure | Choose damage, survival, single target, or enemy-line coverage | ||
Weapon Magic investment | Account for upgrades already committed to a tree | ||
Three results at the same destination | Compare reach, time, HP, Potions, and end reason |
Replace the current weapon when
- The displayed effect directly addresses the current failure.
- You can identify its trigger and target from the screen.
- Three comparable attempts improve reach, clear time, or completion rate.
- The improvement remains after accounting for existing Weapon Magic investment.
Keep the current weapon for now when
- You cannot explain how the higher value addresses the failure.
- The extra effect's target or trigger is unclear.
- Weapon, Skill Cards, and Weapon Magic changed together, so the cause cannot be isolated.
- The only evidence is an old ranking that was not tested against the current screen.
Prefer the difference from your equipped weapon and repeatable results over a fixed tier list.
Seven steps from equipment change to a useful result
- Review the last three attempts and select one repeated first failure.
- Select only one equipment slot connected to that failure.
- Compare old and new gear by the same role: damage, survival, single target, or enemy-line coverage.
- For a weapon, inspect the Weapon Magic guide. For set equipment, inspect the set upgrade tree before assuming the visible item is the whole investment.
- Set upgrades involve Darksteel, so confirm the currency icon, balance, and spend screen instead of confusing it with Shards or another resource.
- Change one thing and test the same destination three times.
- Keep the change only when the reached point, failure symptom, or clear rate improves.
If all three runs are unchanged, use the failed-run diagnosis to separate skill-card issues from permanent progression before spending again.
Do not merge Weapon Magic and set upgrades into one decision
Official iOS update history describes five Weapon Magic trees and a separate upgrade tree for equipment sets. They are both permanent equipment systems, but they lead to different screens and dependencies.

Compare permanent weapon development | |
Check prerequisites and armor/weapon branches for a set | |
Review what Darksteel is used for | |
Organize set collection progress |
The official notes do not establish every tree name, node effect, fixed cost, or maximum tier. Those details require the current in-game screens.
Use the Daily Shop as a collection check
The official Google Play update notes say the Daily Shop guarantees one piece from each equipment set. This can help you check missing set pieces, but that statement does not establish price, refresh time, purchase count, or identical iOS behavior.
Record the pieces you already own before opening the shop. Then separate “missing from the collection” from “solves the current failure.” The armor-set collection guide provides the longer checklist.
Details this guide does not guess
- Complete weapon and armor display order or rarity list
- Individual prices, drop rates, and maximum ranks
- Fixed roles or universal rankings for every equipment set
- Every Weapon Magic and set-upgrade node effect or cost
- One best item for every progression stage
These details should be added to the database only after a current game screen or official update confirms them.
